Sick Adulting: Turmeric Cold Tea

Over the last 48 hours, I was starting to feel a little tickle in my throat here, a little sniffle there. Then Best Friend: Partner In Crime broke up with her boyfriend of 4+ years and we ended up drinking for about 6 hours, and I think what little chance my immune system had was quashed by the waves of whatever it was we kept enjoying and enthusiastically ordering “one more!”

So, you win, cold.

My Gramma, RIP, was an awesome lady and really believed in the power of homeopathic medicine. You’d go to her with some issue and she’d pull out these big books and look up all the ways to try and let you body do the healing on its own.

OMG look at this hawwtie. Miss you Gramma!

I suppose I always liked that idea because it stuck with me and so my first inclination has always been to try and heal instead of just masking the issue with drugs. Don’t get me wrong, I love drugs.

So, since I was making it anyway, I thought I would share my go-to for colds. I learned it…somewhere a few years ago.

It’s a tea that includes turmeric, ginger, lemon, honey and cayenne.

Turmeric is believed to boost your immune system (among many things).

Ginger helps with upset stomach and pain and is a diaphoretic (had to look that one up), which means that it promotes sweating, working to warm the body from within.

Honey is an antibacterial to help you fight colds and can serve as a sore throat soother and a cough suppressant.

Lemon gives you that nice boost of vitamin C which is good for your immune system.

Cayenne will detox the sh*t out of your body, by opening errrrrything up and getting the blood moving to get those toxins out.

Or so the internet says and I choose to believe.

If nothing else, I’m all in for the placebo effect.

The “You Can Find Me Under My Covers, Dying” drink, AKA Turmeric Cold Remedy Tea

You’ll need

1 mug of hot water
1/4 teaspoon turmeric
1/4 teaspoon fresh grated or powdered ginger
1 tablespoon honey
1/2 juice of a lemon or appx. 2 tablespoons of lemon juice
1 dash of cayenne

Put all the ingredients into an empty mug and then pour the hot water over it. Stir. Drink. Try not to die.

You may have noticed, I also included in my picture some other immune boosters. I like Zicam Nasal Swabs and Airborne but if those aren’t available to you you can also just load up on echinacea, zinc and vitamin c (see! I was listening, Gramma!).

Now go drink your tea and try not to die, you adult!
